Description

This piece was never really named and has a title that it has is a little misleading. The movements are not really movements but segments of a single patchwork piece. All 3 movements were originally going to be individual pieces but became shorter segments instead. As a result, they ended up being pieced together with just a measure of rest in between each one.

This is how it breaks down:

  • The opening segment is a regal fanfare with the tones needing to be strongly stated and sustained.
  • The second segment was originally entitled "The March of the Hyperactive Tuba" and was originally written because a friend of mine requested something very challenging to play as part of a euphonium and tuba quartet. The quick rhythms and inversion of the primary theme and rhythm were all meant to make the piece more difficult and a little strange, just for the challenge.
  • The third and final segment was original a sea-chantey inspired of march. The feel of the piece is very march like and the rolling line over the down beats is meant to invoke the feel of a ship rolling in the water with the resolving chords being the chorus of the chantey.

This can be played by any combination of low brass instruments, but the for the sake of the middle segment I suggest using valved instruments only.
